i like the old theme song better. :-) the abrupt cut-off always cracks me up.

mikeypod, earth balance sources it's palm oil from old established plantations in peninsular malaysia and the organic stuff is from brazil. neither palm supplier takes land from orangutans.

http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/showthread.php?111802-Vegan-Butter-or-Margarine-%28Not-Earth-Balance-and-with-no-palm-oil%29

a few months ago i started a job working in a greenhouse, so i regularly have the opportunity to listen to 7+ hours of podcasts daily. i found mikeypod's 'cast last month, and that led me to find meat free radio. do many established vegans discover mikeypod before they find meat free radio? or is it usually the other way around?

anyway, you guys work great together! (and mikeypod, i agree with you, tim is a better host. har!)

also, mikeypod, i'm glad you've found the love for nooch. 'tis a wond'rous substance indeed.

I love soup. Oh I love a soup. There's a place down the street that's a soup cafe that has $2 Tuesdays! (We love a coupon.) They list all the ingredients and nutrition information out in the open where everyone can see it, also they note which selections are vegetarian or vegan. My favorite vegetarian soup is mushroom brie...omgggg!! I could eat that every day. Hey wait--!! It's Tuesday today!! Well I guess I know where my dinner is coming from. NOM!

Hey guys!I'm really promoting the 21-Day Vegan Kickstart to all my friends, family and blog readers. To this end, I'm trying to provide tips and links on my blog that have been helpful on my journey. I believe that the majority of my blog readers are not even vegetarian, so for those who are keen to give this a try, they have many questions. I'm definitely going to put links to my favorite sites, podcasts and resources, but would love to get some from you and your listeners. If you have some favorite resources please either e-mail them to me or comment on my blog and I'll make sure they are put in a place everone can access them. Love you guys!!! SA

As usual, I'm listening to you guys while I try to fall asleep. This time in my Detroit-Rock-City hotel room. I'm laughing out loud, thus not sleeping. But, FYI, Ramble is right...Amy's scramble is amazing. My mouth is kind of watering thinking of it. I also make them at home, and think I posted it on my blog. The picture isn't really pretty as I took it with my phone, but it taste amazing.

And, I made jambalaya the other day with Field Roast chipotle sausages and Gardein fillets. Served it to a bunch of critter-eaters and they loved it!

If you write a note to Gardein they will send you great coupons. I'm kind of going nuts with their goodies!

Ok..xoxo. SA

I would suggest to listeners, to not even even justify this interview with a comment. So much misinformation and misrepresentation about Gary Francione and veganism. Sad.

Hey Tim/Mikeypod. Good show, still enjoying it but before I forget.

Cold remedy. Neti pot, I know it's gross to think about but it does work. Also, lots of fluid and zinc tablets under the tounge when you first feel it. (Zycam)

I feel for you and your stories about having to interact with a meat eating world. It is, of course, totally different for me living in the burbs of ATL than it is for you guys in DC and NYC.... I very rarely go out to eat and when I do it's to a very select subset of places that I know are vegan friendly. I'm with Mikeypod on the .... the longer I am a vegan, the less tolerance that I have for meat conversations. Also, Tim, you handled the dead bird on the sandwich much better than I would have..... I'm widely know for scene causing and I would have pulled it right out for the second time they messed up my sandwich.

We were at a california burrito place the other day and the ppl behind the counter couldn't understand why I didn't want cheese or meat on my burrito EVEN THOUGH we go there fairly often and they have vegan options on their menu. I wasted no time at all filling their entire staff in on my preferences and that I wouldn't tolerate any further sideways glances. Well, John and I got our meals for free, an apology from the manager AND I think that the people that were working there that night will think the next time somebody says no meat.

My theory is this: If you are so accommodiating, as a vegan, that nobody knows what vegans need then there will never been any tolerance towards vegans. Another way to put it is that social pain (in this case them feeling awkard because I was yelling) is the only way to truly movitate people into turly learning a lesson.

Yeah, I know this sounds harsh.... but I think harsh is having to live in a world that doesn't respect anything about you or your beliefs.

Just heard a tidbit of news: Taco Bell's refried beans (Klassy!!) are vegetarian, they aren't made with lard. However, their sour cream is made with animal rennet. So the next time you're in the mood for some fine dining, skip the sour cream.

Ballet shoes - regular ballet shoes are usually all leather, with soft, calf-skin (boo) on the upper and the souls are typically suede. Pointe shoes are usually fabric on the upper...I think satin and they have the same suede on the soul and toe.

Just listening, for the second time, to this show.

I wanted to share what it's like to be a vegetarian in France. Many aspects of it are the same as in the USA I guess but there is something more in France: French cuisine... And I get a hard time holding my position as all French cuisine involves animal products. I mean, no one thinks you can be healthy as a vegetarian and, usually, people are pretty much sure that you should be dying in front of them if you are a vegan, because, come on!, how can you survive eating only carrots and salad?

I used to argue a lot with people when I became a vegetarian, 5 years ago. Now, I don't let them bother me anymore. I don't even let them try and begin a conversation about vegetarianism, because I know for a fact that their only goal is to prove me wrong. I feel I don't have enough time in my life to waste on dead ends arguments... From time to time, I meet (haha!) someone actually interested or curious about the way I eat/live. Then, I can talk, but otherwise I just make a joke ("yeah, I eat only carrots and green salad and no dressing") and talk about something else...

I'm quite sad that I was born vegetarian but my mother met her second husband when I was 4. He was definitely not vegetarian. I used to have vegetarian times n my life but I only came back to vegetarianism when I left my mother's house 5 years ago. So much waste. It makes me sad.

I really want to become vegan but I'm afraid, so afraid, not to be able to live like I want. I don't want to have to explain my choices everyday, not to be able to go to restaurants, and believe me, in France, vegan is nearly never an option anywhere... My best friend has been a vegan for some time now but we don't live close together so I'm also afraid to be alone with my choice.

Sorry to whine here, rough week and day...

Thank you so much for the show, again. :)

Hey Guys,

Sorry for the late response, but you are both welcomed and encouraged to come to Chicago any time!!! Would adore you both to come back and I want to get together with Lauren and Ramble Red Head (did I get the name right??).

Have either of you heard of carrot dogs? Sounded not-so-great to me, but my crush swears it's good. I don't have a grill, so haven't tried this.

xo,
Sallie Ann

Hello,

I've been listening to your show for some time now.

I just randomly wanted to share with you that my girlfriend and I just got our first vegan cookbook for our birthdays from a vegan friend. It's "Vegan Lunch Box Around The World" by Jennifer McCann.

I'm a vegetarian and I've been thinking about turning vegan since I turned (back) vegetarian a few years ago... And as I like the idea of Alternate Vegan, which I heard of in your podcast, I plan on getting it soon.

And just for you to know, I am the guy asking personal questions about his sexual life to Mikeypod... :)

I love MFR. I always get good laughs because you are always in a good mood. Tank you so much. :)

And now a comment for Lauren:
Friends of mine worked in meat-packaging factories and none of them turned vegetarian (or vegan) but one, a few years after that for also other reasons. Some of them stopped eating the kind of meat they used to pack at the factory they worked in. My point is showing the way animals are treated is not a self efficient solution to turn people vegan. It is not enough. People have to feel concerned about the subject before viewing these kind of images. Otherwise they just close their minds to such horrible things and ignore it because they can't bear to realize their impact on the world. You have to be on the path to veganism for these informations to be useful to you.

I didn't mean for that Gordon Ramsey link to gross you out. I will summarize: he has some sort of reality show (the name escapes me at the moment). On one of the episodes, he slaughtered his family's lamb they have been raising for a few months. He made his wife and kids watch the slaughter, to show them where their food comes from. They also filmed it and showed it on the air, which had many viewers in disgust. Many *omnivorous* viewers in disgust. So my question to you is, if more people first-handedly saw where there food came from, would we have more vegetarians/vegans in the world?

I see your point Mikey Pod. I also agree there is a difference between educating people and preaching to people and trying to convince them to change.

Hey guys! The episode was great, and Mikeypod I totally know what you meant about the "omnivorous restricted diet" thing - I was out a not-so-veg-friendly cookout today and most of the people just had five different varieties of dead animal on their plate, compared to the mulititude of bread and fruit that I was able to scrounge up for myself. Haha bun dogs again!!! Anyway keep up the good work. :P

I can really understand not wanting to feel "preached" at, but please remember that this so-called preaching is motivated by a passion to see people stop treating animals in such horrendous ways.

Nice interview, but I could have gone without the preachy-preachy about 15 minutes until the end of the show. Maybe it's just because I really don't like when people try to make others change.

About the vegan fast food (the produce department) its so true, isn't it? Often times when I forget my lunch I just go to a supermarket and get a bunch of fruit and a bag of salad, and there I have it, lunch for today and probably tomorrow too!

http://www.quiznos.com/subsandwiches/Products.aspx

I just looked @ Quiznos website, because I was still unsure about the whole 75 grams of fat in my veggie sub I treat myself to once in a while. They had the option to see the nutritional info without the dressing, too. So the small size veggie sub I get with cheese, but without dressing has 18 grams of fat. I don't know where they are getting 75 from, maybe that is for the large size?

Hey guys, like the amazing La La Lauren, I am behind on the shows and thanks for the shout outs on this episode.

I am now celebrating my 4th month now and so far so good. I have been making more stuff at home and my personal fav lately has been a stove top lasagna and it has spinach and tomato sauce with garlic and it is quick and very tasty.

I tried to call the comment line but it didn't work so play the poopy music and get a new one! :)

I didn't find that article I sent you, my best friend, who just had a baby found it. Her baby is allergic to milk, so her formula is all soy based. And, my best friend is trying to breast feed, but now she has to be completely milk free because the baby even reacts to anything she eats. She came across the article when she was trying to do some research on soy.

She came across the article when she was trying to do some research on soy.

Hey guys! I've been really behind on podcasts lately, so I am just now getting around to this show!

About the chocolate chip pancakes...have you ever tried carob chips? They are a vegan alterniative to chocolate chips and very yummy of course! http://www.metrocandy.com/CAROB-CHIPS

--OMG Tim just said, \"Prolapse safe\" *Embrace Yeast*

In response to Tom\'s voicemail: (I love how he calls it \"vegematarianism\") Anyway, about \"the salad talk\"...I hate how they say, \"well just order this salad without the meat!\" Then you end up paying $14 for a salad because it used to have steak in it. *rolls eyes*

Mieky Pod, I\'m not vegan but, I wish I didn\'t lust for cheese so much. Well, my thighs wish I didn\'t lust for cheese so much. (:

Okay, I'm a great big dork. I just listened to this week's show and realized that I'd said just the opposite of what I'd intended. What I meant to ask for was a podcast dealing with more of the veggie/vegan COOKING and less about the ethics. Not to say you guys spend much time on any soapbox, but it seems most of the shows I have listened to are more about the ethics or talking about restaurant options. I want to learn more about what I want to look for nutritionally when avoiding meat, and good cooking ideas to get the most out of flavors and nutrition when giving up the meat. Also, it seems so much time is spent on trying to make things seem more like cheese or meat and not enough on enjoying the vegetables, grains, beans and nuts for their own sake. My wife Melissa made some so called 'raw chicken nuggets' the other night with a variety of nuts and such. If ever there were something to make me shy away from vegan, that would do it. I'd rather avoid focusing on what I can't have and make what is available as wonderful as possible on it's own. Thanks again, guys!

Hey guys! I've really been enjoying the show. I'm one of those straight guys who has rarely had friends that weren't women or gay men, so it's like listening to friends. About me, I'm one of those heartless omnivores, but my wife is currently on a mostly raw vegan diet. I will still have the occasional meat, but I generally eat what she eats and do a lot of the cooking as well. Anyway, I've really enjoyed the show and will continue to listen, but I have really been looking for a podcast that talks more about veggie/vegan food ethics as many of the vegetarian podcasts seem to do. Do you have any recommendations? I've been through some culinary school and have been considering putting together a cookbook for those couples that one is veggie and the other is not...

Again, love the show and can't wait till the next!

Another great show and thought Paul Seymour was a great guest and loved hearing his stories.

I think it is great that he has been vegetarian for a long time and inspires me just like you two did to get me started.

I still have friends who think this is a phase and my family were teasing me about what I was going to pick for my birthday dinner in November. I told them about the various options and well they were not impressed!

I was so excited the other day when I went to my grocery store and they had an huge section of vegetarian foods or organic that I didn\\\'t realize they had.

I am trying not to eat many frozen items but recently I had tried the Healthy Choice Potstickers made with tofu and veggies and they have a little kick to them but they are very good!

Yay, several of my favorite podcasters in one place (I did miss Eric too, hope he's well).

Otherwise, yay Ramble for diet changes. I wish you luck and hope it brings the health you seek!

Also, now that I think about it, at several restaurants I've found that if there is a tofu dish available I tend to order it because for whatever strange reasons I like it most. Thus, should any of you visit Atlanta I know of several cool Malaysian, Korean, Indian, Chinese, and Thai restaurants I could probably take you to.

Or I could just take you to Chili's

Another great show - love that Ms Lauren was on the show - she is so wonderful.

As a new veggietarian I am getting comments from others as well. I posted pics of what I had last night on my facebook page and seconds later someone compared vegetarian food to cat food! Arghhhhhhhhh

I am getting caught up on all of your shows and really enjoyed this holiday recap.

I recently had an Easter dinner and being a newbie at trying this I wondered how my family would react to this new choice of mine. The good thing is that I had plenty of options and was so full after eating that I didn\'t miss having the ham at all.

I told my folks what I was doing and my father said with a laugh oh really to my mom with a shocked on her face to the added Why? LOL

Just like my coming out as a gay man same goes for this!

It was sooo yummy having dim sum with you all. We should do it again.

For some reason the audio keeps stopping when I try to listen through the site. Even downloading through iTunes... it keeps stopping the download part way though giving me the (!) thingie?..

Or maybe my computras is special. hehehe. But from what I was able to hear it felt like we were just eating together just the other day :P

Thanks for mentioning TeaNY...I'm butt crazy over Moby and so jealous you've seen him walking around the city before! John told me last week he saw him, too. Ahh! You need to have a dinner cast there and get Moby on the show..OMG I'd have a caniption.

Here's what I've been eating:
Trader Joe's simmer sauces! They have a curry simmer sauce, so I made a stew of sorts...I put onions, peppers, mushrooms and tempeh! Its pretty healthy, but I fried the tempeh first. So good though. And good leftover, too.

"...they slip the meat into condoms.." Nice one, Tim. (=

I checked out that Weston A. Price website. It seems like among all their praising of meat, they are constantly defending themselves against vegetarians. If the site is dedicated to a diet rich with meat, why are they so concerned with covering themselves against vegetarians every time they mention meat? For example, "Sentence about why meat is so good for you. (Oh by the way, here is why being vegetarian is STUPID."

Again, we see the same attitude as the guy I work with...always on the defense as if they feel threatened by our different diet choices. Crazy if you ask me.

HEY! I have noticed that there are a lot of different vegan quiches out there, but my friend and I BOTH made this quiche http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=13181.msg80867#msg80867
and it has worked everytime. And I CAN'T COOK! And not only that, we substituted on the ingredients and the amounts (except for the block of tofu)for each quiche we made, and it STILL worked.
Also, I would LOVE for you to have the Eating Consciously guy on your show. Get him to ranting...He's a stitch when he's mad and he cusses like a sailor. Love you guys!

So great to have Eric back! Work potlucks are a pain in the ass. I had someone take chunks of meat and dip them in the dips for the veggies when we had asked people not to since we have two vegetarians in the section and spoons were provided to put the dip on your plate! grrrr!

Great show boys! I loved Mikey all excited about the voicemail haha!

I think its ok to bring your own veggie food when attending a gathering based around eating, esp. if its an all day affair. I have no problem bringing a boca burger for someone to grill, as long as there's no meat juice dripping on it from the other food. And when it comes to that, I usually offer to cook it myself so I'm not a burden to the chef. Usually at gatherings like that, there's nothing for me to eat. Case in point--the company potluck a couple weeks ago. (which I didnt find out about until late, so i had no time to prepare anything..) I hoarded from the fruit bowl and ate a hot dog bun. Everything else had meat. Should have brought a dish!

BTW don't eat at Houllihans restaurant, there is ONE thing vegetarian (certainly nothing vegan) on the menu, pizza. If you don't want that, its a side salad for you. Or you can pay $13-$15 for a main entree salad with no meat in it.

As far as people giving you a hard time about being veggie...I was Twittering about this earlier today. Someone I see on a daily basis gave me a hard time because I wouldn't eat this meat-based dish said person brought in one day. Basically said I was messed up because I don't eat meat. Its too bad we get a hard time because other people don't understand our life styles. That's life, and its a shame isn't it? )=

SO tired of people asking me how I get my protein. That is personal, ok!!! (= Why do they care? I need some snarky comment as a come-back.

Thanks for the info about the beans at Chipotle! I never tried the pinto beans. I am going there tonight with some friends actually! Had no idea.

Someone asked me the other day, "So you still eat chicken, right?" Um no. Seeing chickens all stuffed in a truck on the way to slaughter is the reason why I became veggie in the first place! Icky.

For one of your future shows, don't forget my favorite vegan artist-MOBY! I have a slight obsession. And by slight I mean huge. And by huge I mean ginormous!

Who knew just a small hour of my time could be so fun and enlightening. Now I've got to find someplace to buy seitan. And like I said to Eric for the next show...I want to talk about how fake meat (such as "Chik'n") freaks me out! I don't think I said it on the show but another reason why I stopped eating meat was because of the texture. Its like Archer's problem, in reverse!

Hey guys! I am a friend/co-worker of Lauren and she told me about your podcast-- so I thought I would at least check it out. Great job! What a fun way to start my morning. Loved the song at the end too- so thanks for sharing that as well. :)

Hey guys! I heard about this show from Nessa, I downloaded all the episodes and will listen tomorrow at work. I'm celebrating one year of being vegetarian in the end of August. Very excited about the show and happy to contribute where ever I can if you like!

Yay for Eric joining! Thanks for all the tips boys. i watched the 30 days episode and it made me cry! However that blonde PETA lady was a little too preachy for my taste. I loved the family though.

i am waiting patiently for the next show! So hurry up!

I was in Cambodia so the last few minutes seem to not come through in my download, Ill remedy that in a moment. But I do wish you guys many good programs. My request would be that you bring in medical professionals, nutritionists, because the issues of iron, protein, are essential to being a healthy vegetarian. Too often inexperienced and unprepared vegetarians do damage to their bodies because they think its just taking meat out of your diet and thats all.
